Poliomyelitis Virus ELISA

The Poliomyelitis infection is caused by Enteroviruses which occur epidemically world-wide and often lead to paralysis and death. Mainly children at the age of 3 to 8 years and in rare cases older persons including adults are affected. Three types of human-pathogenic poliomyelitis viruses are actually known. Type 1 and 2 (Brunhilde) cause severe and mild symptoms, respectively. A type 3 infections is rare but associated by severe symptoms. In more than 90% of the infections patients show no subjective symptoms. In other cases following manifestations appear apart from paralysis: unspecific discomforts associated by light fever, irritations of head and throat areas, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. There is no casual treatment for this virus disease. Resulting from the consequent vaccination there is hardly any polio infection in industrialized countries.

The Immunolab Poliomyelitis IgG ELISA is used for the quantitative detection of IgG antibodies to the Poliomyelitis virus in human serum and plasma. The tests detecting all 3 subtypes should be performed to check the immun status before and after vaccination.
